Dr. Vincent Gomes is a lead researcher in the emerging areas Polymer Science and Engineering and novel applications of polymeric nanocomposites. In particular, his focus on colloids and controlled/living emulsion polymerisation has provided new insights into the design, monitoring, scale-up, optimisation and control of such complex, multi-phase reaction systems (Laboratory for Integrated Polymer and Systems Engineering). The development of polymer nanocomposites based on carbon nanotubes and graphene have led to the development of novel sensors and catalysts.

In separation processes, innovations include transformation of waste-to-products, treatment of wastewater systems, sorption-enhanced pressure swing reactors (PSR) and carbon dioxide separation using pressure swing (PSA) and vacuum swing adsorption (VSA). Innovations in catalysis include development of rhenium oxide based catalysts for metathesis reactions and TiO2 composites for photocatalysis. Experience as a Process Engineer in Industry and collaborative research work in industrial projects helps facilitate industrial projects.

In a major collaborative project on Bioengineering, he and his team has discovered a new mechanism of action of glycoproteins and developed a stable and active pharmaceutical formulation for therapeutic applications
